March 10th

My dear Mr Woolner

Very many thanks for the drawing: it does excellently.—2 The “Woolnerian tip” is worth anything to me.—3

Yours very sincerely | Ch Darwin

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and a note in DAR 80: B113 dated ‘March 7 (70)’: ‘W. has seen the tips in women & men. When he was making his figure of Puck he went to Z garden and made drawings of ears of monkeys & shortly afterwards he saw a man with tip & instantly recognized their signification’.
Woolner’s drawing of a human ear showing the unusual feature of a pointed tip (‘Woolner’s tip’) on the outer ear projecting from the inwardly folded margin is in DAR 80: B120.
CD reproduced the drawing and discussed the feature in Descent 1: 22–3.
