To T. H. Huxley   1 October [1869]1

Down | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

Oct 1.

My dear Huxley

M. Kowalewsky, who translated into Russian one of my books, has been staying here.2 He wishes very much to hear one of your Lectures: can you give him an order for admittance? He remains in London only until Oct.— 10th.— He is Brother of the naturalist of the same name.—3

I suppose he can look over your Museum.—4

Yours affectly | C. Darwin

Many thanks about the Horses tooth.5

He is studying Geology & intends travelling with his young & pretty wife6 in Central Asia!—

The year is established by the reference to Vladimir Onufrievich Kovalevsky’s visit (see n. 2, below).
According to Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242), Kovalevsky visited from 30 September to 1 October 1869.
CD probably refers to the Museum of Economic Geology at the Royal School of Mines, where Huxley was professor.
Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya.
