Sterling sent today is very interesting but is he quite fair about ‘Selection’3

The year is established by the reference to Stirling 1869 (see n. 3, below).
The engravings may have been those completed by Edward A. Smith (see letter to Frederick Smith, 9 November [1869]).
The reference is to James Hutchison Stirling’s As regards protoplasm, in relation to Professor Huxley’s essay, On the physical basis of life (Stirling 1869); for Stirling’s discussion of CD’s theory, including his use of the term ‘selection’, see pp. 58–64.
