Yours Respectfully | Charles Layton | Agent D. Appleton & Co

To | Mr Darwin

Not knowing your address I send this to care of Mr Murray—4

The reference is to Descent. On the practice of American publishers of printing from stereotypes, see the letter from Orange Judd & Co., 21 April 1869 and n. 3.
The references are to Thomas Henry Huxley and the philosopher Alexander Bain.
The fifth edition of Origin was published in June 1869 (letter from R. F. Cooke, 22 June 1869).
John Murray was CD’s publisher.
