15, Lombard Street, E.C.

8 Dec.

Dear Mr. Darwin

I am very glad you like my new Edition.2

I have just returned from Scotland where I have been lecturing.

Enclosed is a cheque for my £2.10.3

Believe me | Yours most sincerely | John Lubbock

The year is established by the reference to Lubbock 1869a; see n. 2, below.
Lubbock refers to the second edition of Pre-historic times, as illustrated by ancient remains, and the manners and customs of modern savages (Lubbock 1869a). No letter from CD regarding the new edition has been found.
CD recorded a contribution of £2 from Lubbock in 1869 in his Down Coal and Clothing Club account book (Down House MS). CD was treasurer of the club, which supplied parishioners with coal and clothes in exchange for regular savings.
