to Charles

Sylvester came & said some officers having been speaking so highly of Leonard that I thought you would like to hear it— in their expressive language ‘he is all there’ & perhaps Lenny can translate the military language.3 This note is all topsy turvy as I dont know to whom I am writing

The date range is established by the reference to Leonard Darwin’s performance at military college (see n. 3, below).
The reference is to Caroline Sarah Wedgwood.
James Joseph Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where Leonard Darwin was a student from August 1868 until 1871. Sylvester’s successor at Woolwich was appointed in August 1870. (RMAS archives, Sandhurst Collection.)
