To St G. J. Mivart   21 January [1871]

Down. | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

Jan 21

My dear Sir

I am very much obliged for your kind present.—1 It will take me some time to read it, as I can read but little of anything which requires much thought. If I had known that your book was published I would not of course have directed vol. I of my book to be sent to you;2 nor do I suppose you will care much about it. It will probably excite your indignation. I always console myself with thinking that I have done my best

Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin
