Feby 27

My Dear Sir

The first Edition of your new Book is exhausted—2 Pray send me—by bearer if possible, your corrected sheets that I may go to press at once—with a New Edition of at least 1000 copies.

A copy is on its way to Linc Inn Fields—3

Yours Dear Sir very | faithfully | John Murray

Ch. Darwin Esq FRS | &c &c

The year is established by the reference to Descent, which was published on 24 February 1871; a second printing was made in March 1871 (Freeman 1977).
Murray refers to Descent.
The recipient at Lincoln’s Inn Fields was probably James Murie; see letter from James Murie, 2 March 1871. Murie’s name appears on CD’s presentation list for Descent (see Correspondence vol. 19, Appendix IV).
