Dear Mr Darwin

As your promise to appear in Albemarle St & receive my two Bills for the Third Edn. of your Descent of Man has not been fulfilled I think it better to delay no longer & beg you to receive enclosed 2 Bills for £420" each—dated from May 1, at Six & 9 months date2

I remain My Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | John Murray

Chas Darwin Esq

Down | Beckenham

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 12 March [1871].
Murray was mistaken. CD had requested that the bills be sent to Southampton or to Down (see letter to John Murray, 12 May [1871]). Murray’s payment was for the third printing of Descent (see letter from John Murray, 10 May 1871).
