Dear Sir

I am much obliged by your kind & interesting letter.2 What you tell me about the interest felt in America on my own & allied views surprises & highly gratifies me. The extract from the Liberal Christian is one of finest eulogiums I ever read on men of science.3

I have real pleasure in enclosing my photograph, as a very slight token of respect & of my thankfulness for your very kind letter4

Dear Sir | yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

P.S. I have received the Index & pamphlet, which I will soon read.5 My wife has read them & been struck with them.—

I have now read, Truths for the Times, & I admire them from my inmost heart, & I believe that I agree to every word

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from F. E. Abbot, 11 May 1871.
The Liberal Christian was a Unitarian periodical published in New York. The extract has not been found.
The photograph was an 1871 profile by Oscar Rejlander (John van Wyhe, personal communication).
Abbot evidently sent CD an issue of the Index (a weekly paper that he edited), and a copy of the pamphlet Truths for the times (Abbot [1870]).
