From Emma Darwin to Roland Trimen   [22 August 1871]1

Haredene

Tuesday

Dear Mr Trimen

I am very sorry to say that Mr Darwin has been so unwell (ill I may say) that we are hastening our return home as soon as possible— He is quite unequal to seeing you which he very much regrets.2

Our stay in this charming place is a great disappointment, though I hope he will reap the benefit of the rest afterwards.

He desires me to repeat how very sorry he is not to be able to see you | believe me | yours very truly | Emma Darwin

The date is established by the reference to the Darwins’ departure from Haredene (see n. 2, below); the Tuesday before 25 August 1871 was 22 August.
Trimen had proposed visiting the Darwins, who rented Haredene, Albury, Surrey, from 28 July to 25 August 1871 (letter from Roland Trimen, [21] August [1871]; CD’s ‘Journal’ (Appendix II)).
