From W. E. Darwin   4 November 1871

Bank, Southampton,

Nov 4 1871

My dear Father,

I write a line to de Chaumont tonight to get him to ask anyone at Netley who has the best chance of seeing shivering fits to observe.1

I am almost certain I have never had your H. Spencer’s essays,2 I certainly have not them now. I am pretty sure when I last looked into them it was at Down

Francis Stephen Bennet François de Chaumont had previously supplied William with observations of shrugging for CD’s work on Expression (see Correspondence vol. 19, letter from F. S. B. F. de Chaumont to W. E. Darwin, 11 March 1871). He was an assistant professor at the Army Medical School, Netley Hospital.
CD had the first volume of a collection of Herbert Spencer’s essays (Spencer 1858–74; see Marginalia 1: 768–9). The book was borrowed by Richard Buckley Litchfield (see Correspondence vol. 19, letter to H. E. Litchfield, [before 2 December 1871]).
