CD’s letter of 3 February 1872 has not been found, but see the letter from John Murray, 2 February [1872].
D. Appleton & Co. had published an edition of Journal of researches in 1871, based on stereotypes of the 1870 edition published by John Murray (Journal of researches 1870; see Freeman 1977). A reprint of the 1871 edition was published in 1872 (Journal of researches US ed. (1871) and US ed. (1872)).
Expression was published in November 1872 by John Murray. The US edition, dated 1873, was apparently issued in December 1872 (Expression US ed.; see Freeman 1977).
