From Albert Günther   19 June 1872

My dear Sir

You will be glad to hear that I have been appointed Assistant Keeper last week;1 as I was spared the trial of a competition, the affair passed off very smoothly.

Fred. Smith is still unwell & away, although he writes me he hopes to be back next week. But whilst he is away, I have to look after so many things, that scientific work is neglected altogether.

Yours very sincerely | A Günther

At Günther’s request, CD had provided a testimonial in support of his application to become assistant keeper of the zoological department at the British Museum (letter from Albert Günther, 10 May 1872, and letter to Albert Günther, 11 May [1872]).
