To Charles Lyell   [9 April 1873]1

[16 Montague Street] London

I hope that you have enjoyed your excursion   The weather, however, has not been favourable as far as I can remember in this bewildering London life. We return home early tomorrow morning— I did not hear that you were off, till you were gone, as I told my wife I shd call on you one evening2

My dear Lyell | Yours ever very truly | Ch Darwin

The date is established by a copyist’s note referring to a postmark ‘AP 9 73’ and by the reference to returning home. According to Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242), the Darwins returned to Down on 10 April 1873.
Lyell had been in Ludlow, Shropshire (see letter from J. D. Hooker, 25 April 1873).
