To C. I. F. Major   11 February 1873

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Feb 11. 1873

Dear Sir

I am very much obliged for yr note, & am very sorry that you have had so much trouble & have given up the intention of bringing out a translation.1 I will write by this post to the first gentleman & enquire whether he still wish to translate my book.2

With my best respects I remain | dear Sir | yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

The other prospective translator has not been identified. Expression was translated into Italian by Giovanni Canestrini and Francesco Bassani (Canestrini and Bassani trans. 1878). See letter from C. I. F. Major, 6 February 1873 and n. 2. No correspondence with Canestrini and Bassani has been found before a letter from Canestrini in 1875 asking for permission to publish an Italian translation of Expression (letter from Giovanni Canestrini, 29 July 1875, Calendar no. 10102).
