To T. H. Farrer   28 April 1873

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Ap 28. 1873

My dear Farrer

If you should ever again take to insects & flowers, as I heartily hope you will, I advise you to get

Dr Hermann Müllers Befruchtung der Blumen durch insekten

Leipzig Engelmann 18731

For as far as I have read it seems to me to be an excellent book—

yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

CD’s annotated copy of Müller’s book on the fertilisation of flowers by insect agency (H. Müller 1873) is in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 610–12). Farrer had published articles on the fertilisation of papilionaceous plants (Farrer 1868 and 1872) and CD had encouraged this work (see, for example, Correspondence vol. 20, letter to T. H. Farrer, 13 October [1872]).
