To William Ogle   5 May [1873]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

May 5th

My dear Dr. Ogle

I think the “Die Befruchtung der Blumen durch Insekten by Dr. H. Müller 1873 Leipzig” (1 vol. with 478 pages), would be well worth your getting; for besides many excellent original observations, it seems a perfect index for Germany & Italy of all that has been done.—2

Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

The year is established by the reference to H. Müller 1873. CD was reading the book in May 1873 (see letter to Hermann Müller, 5 May 1873).
Ogle had published three papers on the fertilisation of plants (see Ogle 1869, 1870a, and 1870b). CD had lent Ogle a paper on this topic; see Correspondence vol. 16, letter from William Ogle, 2 September 1868. H. Müller 1873, pp. 3–27, included a review of all the literature on the subject.
