Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

July 9th

My dear Sir

You have been most kind & generous on my behalf, & I much regret that you should have wasted in vain so much of your valuable time.2

I shall ever feel grateful for your exertions, & with sincere respect, I remain | Yours faithfully & obliged | Charles Darwin

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from Armand de Quatrefages, 8 July 1873.
