I returned last night, leaving Huxley at Baden Baden really remarkably well.—1 By all means let me have the plants to name whenever you please.2

I should very much like to see you this Autumn, one Sunday, bringing Strachey with me & taking lunch & the chance of you being well enough to see us. I am engaged next Sunday this day week)— would the following do?— we should walk over from Orpington3

Hooker had accompanied Thomas Henry Huxley on a recuperative visit to France and Germany in July 1873. They arrived in Baden Baden, a spa town in Baden-Württemberg, at the end of July. For more on their trip, see L. Huxley ed. 1900, 1: 390–5.

Richard Strachey and Hooker visited Down on Saturday 23 August 1873 (Emma Darwin’s diary (DAR 242)). Orpington station on the South Eastern Railway line was about three miles from CD’s home.
