To Theodor Gomperz   1 September [1873]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

September 1.

Dear Sir

I thank you for your interesting & suggestive letter, the reception of which has gratified me much.—2 I have lately been very unwell, & my doctors order me to think as little as possible on any subject.3 Nevertheless I could not help reading your letter once: I will carefully preserve it & hereafter consider it with the attention which it deserves.—4

Pray accept my thanks & my respect & believe me | Dear Sir | Yours faithfully & obliged | Charles Darwin
