From John Murray   23 September [1873]1

50, Albemarle St. | W.

Septr. 23

Dear Mr Darwin.

There is a novelty in the accounts wch I render along with this—viz—that whereas ordinarily I have to pay you money—in this instance the Balance is against you2

You can look them over at your leisure— there is no hurry.

I have not yet been able to begin upon the New Edition of your “Expression”. Such are the wonderful fluctuations of a Booksellers business!

I remain My Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | John Murray

Chas Darwin Esq

The year is established by CD’s payment to Murray (see n. 2, below).
On 24 September 1873, CD recorded in his Account books–cash account (Down House MS) that he made out a cheque to Murray, his publisher, for £41 7s. 5d. for ‘Presentation Copies of various Books’.
