To J. V. Carus   17 November [1873]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. [2 Bryanston Street, London.]

Nov. 17th

My dear Sir

I write one word just to say that I am beginning to prepare a new & corrected Edit. of the “Descent of Man”. I mention this in case a new Edit. should ever be wanted in Germany.2

I sincerely hope that you are well & remain | Yours very truly | Ch. Darwin

The year is established by the reference to CD’s starting work on the second edition of Descent (see CD’s ‘Journal’ (Appendix II).
The first edition of Descent had been translated by Carus and published in two German editions (Carus trans. 1871 and Carus trans. 1871–2); he also translated the second edition into German (Carus trans. 1875).
