To Eduard Koch   20 December [1873]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Dec. 20th

Dear Sir

I am very much obliged for the copy of the beautifully got Translation of my Variation under Domestication, received a few days ago; & for your present of the admirable work on the microscopical structure of rocks.—2

Dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

The year is established by the address and by publication date of the second German edition of Variation (see n. 2, below). The printed stationery is of a sort that CD used between January 1872 and November 1874.
CD refers to the second German edition of Variation (Carus trans. 1873) and to the first volume of Harry Rosenbusch’s work on the microscopical physiography of minerals and rocks, published by Koch’s firm, E. Schweizerbart’sche Verlagshandlung, in 1873 (Rosenbusch 1873–7). The first volume has not been found, but the second volume is in the Darwin Library–Down.
