From L. C. Harrison   [1 July 1874]

Our 2d. and smaller Edition was published in 1832. The title ‘English Botany’ or coloured figures of British plants’ by Sir J. E. Smith. The Figures by James Sowerby.1

As ours is bound, Pinguicula is Vol. I. p. 17. and p. 18.2 Tab: 24, 25, 26—

There are references I suppose to the larger Edition—viz. P. lusitanica E.B. 145. P. Alpina. E.B. supp. 2747— P. Vulgaris, E.B. 70 P. grandiflora E.B. 2184.3

I am delighted to hear the extract was of any use—

See letter from L. C. Harrison to Emma Darwin, [before 1 July 1874] and n. 2. Harrison refers to James Edward Smith and to J. E. Smith and Sowerby [1832]–46.
The passage that Harrison quoted in her letter of [before 1 July 1874] does not appear in the first edition of the work (J. E. Smith and Sowerby 1790–1814).
The references are to J. E. Smith and Sowerby 1790–1814, 3: 145; 1: 70; 31: 2184, and to W. J. Hooker and Sowerby [et al.] 1831–63, 2: 2747. Pinguicula lusitanica is pale butterwort; P. alpina is alpine butterwort; P. vulgaris is common butterwort; P. grandiflora is large-flowered butterwort.
