From H. H. Bancroft   3 August 1874

Mr Charles Darwin

Dear Sir

Will you do me the honor to accept the volume herewith sent,—and those that are to follow—prepared in the hope that they might prove not wholly valueless to those who make mankind a study1

Could I indulge in the further hope that in this poor gift some slight return is made for the immense benefit which by your writings you have conferred upon me, the thought would be indeed most gratifying

very Respy | Hubert Bancroft

San Francisco Cal. | 3rd. Aug. 1874

Bancroft was working on a series of volumes on the history of the western United States; the volumes were produced with the help of a literary workshop employing up to fifty people at a time (ANB). Bancroft presumably sent the first volume of his first work, Native races of the Pacific states of North America (Bancroft et al. 1874–6). CD’s copy has not been found in the Darwin Libraries at CUL and Down.
