To Ludwig Noiré   19 November [1874]1

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Nov. 19th

Dear Sir

I am much obliged to you for your great kindness in having sent me your work “Die Welt &c”, which I hope soon to read, but I am to my great grief a very poor German scholar & a book in that language takes me a very long time.2

With much respect, Dear Sir | Yours faithfully & obliged | Charles Darwin

The year is established by the postmark on the envelope (Professor John C. Gray, private collection); Noiré’s book (see n. 2, below) was published in 1874.
CD’s copy of Noiré 1874, Die Welt als Entwicklung des Geistes. Bausteine zu einer monistischen Weltanschauung (The world as development of the intellect: the elements of a monistic worldview), is in the Darwin Library–Down.
