To H. A. Huxley   [5 December 1874]

2. Bryanston St | Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Sat. morning

My dear Mrs Huxley

I want very much to see Huxley1 tomorrow morning & I have just heard the horrid news that he is going down to High Elms tomorrow to meet Bishop Colenso.2

Is this true? Will you be so kind as to send me a card, as I must & will see him before leaving London.3

In Haste. Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

High Elms, Down, Kent, was John Lubbock’s country address. John William Colenso, bishop of Natal, visited England in 1874 to protest against harsh treatment of native peoples in Natal (Cox 1888, 2: 388–401).
CD met T. H. Huxley on 6 December 1874; see letter to G. H. Darwin, [6 December 1874]. No card from Henrietta Anne Huxley has been found.
