My Dear Sir

Your Twining & Climbing Plants” seems to me a very curious book & I am quite willing to publish it for you on the conditions adopted in your previous publications—I taking all risque

I return the MS with this as I believe you propose making some alterations in the MS—now that it is to come forth as a separate volume2

My Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | John Murray

Chas Darwin Esqr

The year is established by the reference to Climbing plants 2d ed. (see n. 2, below).
Climbing plants 2d ed. was published in November 1875 (Publishers’ circular 1875); CD had originally planned to publish it as part of Insectivorous plants (letter to J. V. Carus, 7 February 1875). The first edition was published as a double issue of the Journal of the Linnean Society (Botany) (‘Climbing plants’) and as a book (Climbing plants) published by Longmans and Williams & Norgate.
