From Robert B. Nichol to William Kemp   22 October 1861

Galashiels Free Manse

22d. Octr 1861.

Dear Sir,

A friend of mine, who has at present a Volume on the eve of publication, is very anxious to obtain any information on the subject of the Runes, Runic inscriptions, &c. beyond what is contained in the “Statistical” account of Dumfries-shire, which he has seen. You are the only friend I can think of within a very wide circle, at all likely to possess the knowledge or to be able to put me in the way of obtaining it. An early reply will considerably enhance the favour you will thereby confer on Yours Very Truly | Robert. B. Nichol

Mr Kemp, Senr.
