From Robert Chambers to William Kemp   14 April 1848

Edinburgh,

April 14, 1848

Dear Sir,

I am quite taken by surprise by your additional set of measurements from Teviotdale. Some day I must go and see these terraces myself. They are too late to come in at their proper place in the book, but they shall be given nevertheless. It is very curious how all corresponds north and south, only Glenroy having scarcely any of the terraces so remarkable elsewhere, while those it has scarcely appear in the south. However, my object is to report nature, not to make theories about her. I presume you have used a point on the Hawick railway as a basis, and made allowance for the height of its datum above the sea (about 712 feet).

With many thanks for your kind communication, I am | dear sir, | Sincerely yours, | R. Chambers.
