al Gran <illegible> –

Roma

14 Giugno 1

My dear Henry

Here we are once more at imperial Rome, which I pronounce better calculated for a winter residence & less for a summer than Naples, for in hot weather one misses the clear waters of that delightful Bay & the reflexions in the dark waters under the rocks by Rocca Romana which look so refreshing all along that coast. I find the air heavy after Albano, where we staid some days & where it certainly is particularly elastic. We have just been to the top of this Temple of Peace, from which there a <sic> delightful view. They say the Mal <illegible> is already begun, owing to the unseasonable rains which took place last week, & whic<h> 2 are it seems always unwholsome <sic> here if they occur between May & September. We have written to take the house at Varese but shall not know if we have it till we get to Bologna. We find Maria 3 able to travel which at least is one piece of luck & saves us much inconvenience. Caroline 4 is charmed with her pressoir 5 – we saw beautiful wild flowers above Pæstum. I envy Mr M. 6 for having got to Amalfi which we did not accomplish, the weather was so stormy. He was very near swamped. His Cicerone did nothing but cross himself & turn his eyes up to Heaven. I am glad you saw Anjoij. 7 Both Genoa & Lucca Baths seem to be in higher favour with you than last year.

Yrs affly
