TALBOT1208

Innspruck 1
Sept. 3d 1824

My Dear Mother,

You should take a drive to see the lake of Stahremberg [sic], I was two hours & a quarter going slowly to the point where you have the first view of it which I thought pretty. I was disappointed in finding that the road did not go near the Kochelsee, & the other lakes – About ten minutes before two I came to a fine view from the brow of a hill, of the chain of alps not far off Soon afterwards I got among the hills which were without much character, but the drive was pleasant with the evening sun, when it set however it grew cold. – At nine oclock I got to a place where there was no accommodation of any kind, so I was obliged to go on to Mittenwald the next post. By the way I saw an ignis fatuus sitting very quietly in a marsh, not flitting about to lure one to his doom – The Moon set & left the night cloudy & very gloomy – I got to Mittenwald 20 minutes before 12, and went to bed as no supper was to be had –

This Morning I set off at ½ past 8 & found myself among romantic mountains, which continued to the next post Seefeld & then I descended a long & steep mountain into the valley of the Inn – The view of the Innthal from the mountains was very pleasing – I arrived here at ½ past one; & after dinner mean to go on to Schönberg or further – I hear a new road was made last year where I am going, passable for my carriage –

Yours affectly
H.T.
