Zante
13th April 1826
My Dear Mother
I left Corfu early on the 11th, to visit Santa Maura, where we arrived in the evening, finding the appearance of that town not very prepossessing, and the weather being most delightful with the sea like a mirror, I [illegible deletion] went on the next morning, and arrived in Zante at sunset – One voyage was most prosperous we were but 19 hours coming from Corfu (exclusion of the time spent in port). The sea was smooth as a river, and several dolphins accompanied us surprized at our unusual appearance, and emulous of our velocity – The Greeks have gained a great victory at Missolonghi 1 last Thursday, everybody in these islands is rejoicing at it. – From hence I can see the low coast of Elis and behind it the snowy mountains of Arcadia.
