November 20th 1
My Dear Henry
I am so sorry you did not come here yesterday, as you were expected. Notwithstanding Ly L 2 – has this moment dispatched an express to you at Darlington I doubt so much his finding you, that I send this by the post, thinking you must get it tomorrow at latest, tho’ the cross post is always contrariast. Pray come here immediately, as it is quite a thing to see, & she has been so particularly civil about you, & having received an answer from Ly Dundas 3 who is at home, consequently you will not find them at Dinsdale. We shall settle our plans when we see you – I am sorry you wasted your time in going there.
Never mind putting off Mrs Herbert 4 it cannot signify & shew to her which day a loose <illegible> (as yr aunt H has it) comes to her, & need only cost you the trouble of another short letter to say you are under the necessity of postponing that pleasure &c &c This house 5 is splendid but come & judge for yourself – it is not near finished
<yours?> 6
Ly L – says Darlington is only twelve miles from here – we dine at ½ past seven
I hope you did not forget to put Ly Grantham’s 7 letter in the post
