My Dear Mother
There is no one here but the owners of the mansion – I was informed at York that the Belfasts 4 are expected today at Castle Howard 5 from Ravensworth; which if it be true is a proof how rapidly intelligence circulates. I found a letter from William, 6 John 7 appears to be with him at Normandy, not that he says so, that would be quite unlike him to do, but he intimates as much. Isabella 8 writes me word that she had long ago told me of her marriage, but that her letter was returned the other day from one of the Welsh Post offices as “not called for” altho’ I had taken the trouble to write a letter to their postmaster desiring him to forward my letter. Poor Mr Awdry 9 is in affliction for the death of his son, 10 but he seems to bear it with great resignation, and writes to me about farming affairs as usual.
