My Dear Henry
I wish you were here to see some most beautiful Sketches of Laycock abbey, which Mr Twopenny 1 sent us to look at, and which he has now finished. There is No 1. The Place for Holy water & Door way, most highly finished, as indeed they all are. No 2 – my room in the Gable with the tall & beautiful chimney, and Oliver Cromwell’s 2 Stable window. No 3 – the North side in the Laundry Court with its gables & Chimneys. No 4 – The Nuns’ Fire place. No 5 – the Tower with my gable end in the distance & the East Terrace foreshortened. No 6 – the Chapter House. No 7 – an angle of the Cloisters, including the picturesque windows of Wright’s room, over. He has in most places drawn it as it would be (as it is in fact) if the Ivy was almost cut away – which shews of course much more the beauty of the Architecture. He says he wishes the knife could do with the Ivy what his pencil has done.
Caroline 3 says she owes you half a Letter for that truncated one she sent you. Mt Edgcumbe 4 arrived yesterday from Florence – He is most remarkably unlike his Brother, & has been abroad many years, which makes him so well bred as he is, but it will go off when he has been some time in England.
Ever affly yours
