TALBOT2490

London

1st Decr

Dear Mr F.

When King 1 came to Markeaton 2 he only stayed a few hours, & then said that particular business obliged him to go on the same evening to Manchester, & to return to London another way – He went away leaving the amount of jointure undecided and without even writing me a line (from Derby) to tell me so. Consequently Mr M’s lawyer 3 called on me the next day to say that it appeared necessary for me to decide upon it myself – And as my lawyer had abandoned the field & left me unsupported, I immediately agreed to the sum proposed by Mr M. namely 600£ 4 a year, which (after all) was I recollect the sum I at first thought of.

Mr M. was so much pleased at this that he sent me word he would now accept 500£ a year, if I thought the estate would not bear more, but I preferred letting it stand as it was –

Mr King’s manner was more brusque and tyrannical than ever, hardly to be excused by his having travelled all night, he insists upon my naming his son one of my trustees. Do you know anything of the young man? I am not much inclined to it.

Yours affly

Henry

Capt. Feilding
