My Dear Mother
The rain which began at 11 o’clock on Sunday morning, abated today at 1, having lasted fifty hours – It has greatly cooled the air and refreshed the vegetation – I have been taking a walk, the first since we arrived – The mists are clearing away from the Oberland and the peak of the Jungfrau is just visible above the clouds – I can distinguish the Niesen through a veil of vapours – The views of the city, with the Aar and the neighbouring mountains covered with forests are more strikingly beautiful than they had remained in my memory – I find I had forgotten many things about the place, which has been embellished with a good many new buildings and country houses, & exhibits every appearance of prosperity – Do you remember a great figure of a giant on a tower near our house? I had quite forgotten him, but recollected him the moment I saw him
I hope Mr F. 1 received a letter from me dated the 8th
