TALBOT2832

Dear Sir,

May I hope you will excuse the liberty I have taken in ordering my bookseller to send you a copy of a small pamphlet which I have just published on the Poor laws? It is a subject of much interest at this time, & as what has been at done [sic] at Uley 1 has succeeded so far beyond all that I could have hoped for, & as I have had the opportunity of gaining more information respecting it than can have fallen to the lot of most other persons, added to the probability of the Workhouse system being generally adopted, I have thought it my duty to lay this short tract before the publick, which I hope you will do me the favor to accept.

I hope your attempts at Laycock have met with similar success –

I remain Dear Sir Yours truly
T J H Baker

Mr Cowell, 2 one of the assistant P L 3 Commissioners, is on the point of publishing an account of the case of Uley – (whether of any other places I cannot tell) which you will perhaps like to see when it shall appear.
