My Dear Mother
On the assembling of the house at 5 o’clock this afternoon, Ld Althorp 1 informed us he had resigned, in consequence of the extreme reluctance which he felt to propose once more the Irish Coercion Bill – He said that Abercromby, Spring Rice, Ellice 2 and Grant were of his opinion on the subject – I then went to the H. of Lords where I heard Lord Grey 3 make a fine speech which he designated as being “the closing act of his political Life” He said he had resigned, declared that he had redeemed the pledges which he gave to the Country when he took office, of Reform, Peace, and Retrenchment, under difficulties & exposed to opposition such as no minister ever had to encounter, and took a pathetic farewell of their Lordship’s, appealing to their candour & sense of justice to excuse his errors
It is not known who will be ministers. –
Yours affly
Henry
