My Dear Mother
I wish you would write me a letter to the Poste Restante at Nyon, to tell me what quarter of Geneva you reside in, that we may not go wandering about the environs; and if you like to risk a letter addressed to the poste restante at Salins I daresay it will arrive there before we pass through, & we shall be very impatient to hear from you again.
This is a strong fortified Town, and being Friday, therefore there is nothing to eat, so after the semblance of a dinner we mean to go 4 postes further tonight.
We left London on Monday the 18th in the Dart steamboat at ½ past nine precisely, & were landed at Ramsgate after an agreeable passage at 5 in the afternoon, Amandier 1 accompanied us – We hired a coach & went to Dover in the evening, and thought the approach to that place by moonlight looked very picturesque – Next morning we had rather a rough passage to Calais of 2 hours and ¾ on board a French Steamer. We stayed at Calais the remainder of that day, & hired a calèche 2 from M. Rignolle. – Next day Amandier left us & went in the diligence to Paris, and we set off for St Omer – finding that town quite full, owing to the arrival of Ld Hertford 3 & suite, we went on & stopped for the night at the little town of Aire – yesterday we dined at Arras and slept at Cambray –
Yours affly
Henry
