My Dear Mother
I hope you received my last letter from Avesnes, 1 announcing our speedy arrival at Geneva; since then, we have been travelling quietly onwards, passed through Mezières, Sédan, Verdun, all places of no interest, Nancy, where they have lately erected a statue to King Stanislas in the middle of a handsome square,2 in the middle of a handsome square, and Épinal, to this place: where we arrived last night after dark in a torrent of rain. The inn is excellent, and the weather being very showery, we have stopped here to rest a day. There is a pretty public walk laid out by Stanislas in former days – The town is seated in a hollow between 2 mountains, where there are natural hotsprings – Tomorrow if fine weather we resume our journey & hope to reach Geneva Saturday evening.
