My Dear Henry
I wonder much we hear nothing from you. The weather is bad, the trees are leafless, it is a premature winter this year, & I almost think it is too late in the Season to begin a picturesque Tour in Wales, unless indeed you have made up your mind to stay your two objectionable winter months at Swansea or Dunraven, 2 as Jane 3 recommends, which I mentioned to you in my last, for it is a terrific journey from this place all across England to Hastings. I am as much as you the enemy of long visits, and certainly nothing will keep me here beyond the 3d of November unless it should be your arrival just at that time. I should not like to depart the very day you come, otherwise it would suit me best to keep to my day, and Mr F. 4 too, who wants to be in England upon business, and we have positively promised to visit Lanelay 5 again. The Lansdownes 6 who had quite set their heart on going to Königsburg & becoming acquainted with the Professor’s family in which Henry 7 has been so long domesticated, Changed their mind when they got to Berlin. The Inns so bad, the weather so cold, the face of nature so winterized, that they could go no farther & sent for Henry to come to them. I foresaw this would happen, Knowing how miserable the North of Germany is for winter travelling.
I beg you will answer this immediately because if you have changed your mind also, and are not coming, or if you are not coming within a reasonable time I must give up all thoughts of waiting for you. Mr F says that he is sure Constance & Charlotte 8 will get on admirably together sans H. pour intermediare. 9 We had an excellent passage from Bristol to Cardiff, hardly 4 hours & very smooth water & fine day, I wish we may be as lucky gig back. It is too bad of you not writing once since we parted
