Laycock Abbey
12th Decr
Dear Henry
I wish you would pay the Coachman, as he keeps bothering me with Letters. His account Gwynne 1 says is ainsi 2 – the amount of his Book which includes wages &c &c is (with the letters which he charges for) £14 ·· 5 ·· 4½ from which deduct 3 months rent from the 16th August to the 16th November £4 ·· 0 ·· 0 and 24 days more to the 10th Decr

He makes a claim for seven weeks taking care of the Britzke (the only one left) it is too much to give him half a crown a week for taking care of one carriage when he had no more for taking care of so many. – He is a very cunning rapacious Man against whom it is necessary to be on one’s guard. You must make him give you a proper receipt & then you may give him as many half crowns as will make it even money – which I leave to you. I shall be very glad to get rid of him & his demands. He has been extremely troublesome in the way of writing & bothering. The Harness had better be brought in its box & deposited in Sackville Street, 3 it cannot be in a drier place. If I was to sell it I should probably sell it cheap and have to buy another set in the Spring very dear. If Mr Higgs succeeds in letting the Stables, The Britzke must be sent to Thrupp.4 I will not give him leave to beautify & whitewash the Stables, because I suspect a job for himself that being Mr Higgs’s line If you were to bring the Britzke down here I should have to pay for taking it up to town in the Spring, besides the Coach which I must take up.
The Coachman gave notice on the 10 Novr so Gwynne has of course charged the rent to the 10th Decr. I shall be glad when he is completely done with. Kit & Ly Charlotte 5 pursued their way to Margam 6 this morning via Chepstow. I shall be glad pleased when the light of your Countenance shines upon us again, it will enliven us much. If you can do nothing in London you are better here I want to know who lives in the Stables now – I have asked this question several times but cannot get an Answer.
If you want to send for the Coachman to come & be paid, he is to be found at No 19 Scotland Yard, Whitehall which I suppose must be Lord Henley’s.
It is just as well for me to pay Thrupp for the Stand of the carriage as the Coachman for taking care of it in my own Stables. However I am too happy to get rid of him on any terms so that he shall not come again after me for anything
Mind about the Receipt
