TALBOT3708

Lacock July 11th 1838

My Dear Mother

Today the carpet 1 arrived; – Pompey received it with loud barking – He is a great admirer of the “statu quo”, & is of opinion that “whatever is, is right” – a hater of all novelty, new faces & new things. By the way Pompey behaved very ill the other day: Nicole 2 took him a walk in the village, & the first use he made of his liberty was to bite a little boy. henceforth he is to take no walk unmuzzled –

July 12th

Constance 3 set off this morning a little before eleven o’clock, and I am to follow about 3 o’clock on the afternoon; we mean to sleep at Clifton 4
