Tuesday Sept 21st
My dear Henry
Ela 2 has received your 2 letters 3, and we will call at Simms’ Library 4 this morning to make the enquiries you wish. Our weather is much finer since yesterday morning, but it was very rough, with frequent storms on each of the preceding days – On Sunday afternoon we drove up to Entryhill 5 and saw both Mr and Mrs Monteath. 6 I gave your message & have some hopes of recovering those stray numbers of the Journal of B.L. 7 to take home with me tomorrow.
But Mr Monteath had evidently stowed them somewhere out of mind; he made many apologies, and also for having kept the other Book so long – I have no doubt he would have said something more about this, yesterday, had I seen him: for he called when I was out, and left his card, but no message. –
I have ordered a Corsham 8 fly to meet me at the Station at 5 O’C. tomorrow – so I hope to be home in time to bring you some Fish for dinner – I have done many things that were wanted for Lacock Abbey, – and instituted enquiries for Cooks that may lead to something suitable after a while, but there are great difficulties –
I found Dr Watson 9 in full practise and as friendly as ever – he gave his best attention (and at least an hour of his time) to us on the Friday morning. I am very hopeful of the result.
We are now going to drive round the Park & view the latest improvements – Ela tried to get into the Abbey Church; 10 but found it impossible, from the incumbrance of workmen.
We are very glad you mentioned our travellers’ having reached Pisa: for the enclosure to Ela was written at la Spezia 11 – We have today posted a letter to the address at Florence. No doubt they are very happy now & have the advantage of us in point of weather. Love to Charles 12 –
Your affectionate
Constance
