Sunday Eveg
My dear Henry
as it held up for all the latter part of this day perhaps it may be possible to finish planting the hiatus tomorrow it is not however Valdè deflendus 1 for it makes the Shrubbery so much more wholsome [sic]. Already I have put some Evergreen judiciously for they are the only real dependence for hiding. The Plane trees will grow tall & only hide the Sky & will have the same inconveniens [sic] of keeping out light & air that the old Elm had, but as you will it, it is going to be done. Then as I understand you, I may have all the rest Planes, Turkey Oaks &c &c for my new plantation to intermix with the Forest trees which I am going to put there. I do not mean to have any scrubby paltry things like Poplars or Larch in my prt 2 plantation but valuable Oaks, ash, Birch & they will grow apace in that rich maiden soil. Pray answer this by return of post if you have any objections to make. William’s 3 Elm I am going to take possession of & give it an honorable place for his sake. I shall put in a good many Spruce Firs entirely for Nurses to the others & to be cut down in a very few years when they have answered their purpose (a thing most people forget to do) They say Spruce is better for this than Scotch
