Munich
30th May 1842
My Dear Mother
I arrived this morning early – The Mt Es 1 are not here, and I only found a letter from Hora 2 27 days old, & throwing no light upon their plans – I told you how it would be, notwithstanding our manifold requests to write often & explicitly.
The weather is burning hot – Such heat and brightness as one would expect at Malta or Cairo. About six in the evening it grows pleasant – I arrived here without accident, and some parts of the journey were very agreeable, but I fell sick at Ulm owing to the heat. Fortunately the next day I got quite well again. I have heard nothing from you or Constance 3 since I left England.
Professor Martius 4 is in Town, but I have not seen him yet.
I hope Caroline 5 is resting somewhere, & not travelling today, for at present – 6 o’clock – it is so hot, that I found a little turn or two in the Botanic Garden almost too oppressive – Whatever else may have changed at Munich, the two towers of the Cathedral look just the same, & I can fancy it only a few weeks since I last saw them. On the door of the Garden is written – Florum dædalæ telluris gentes dissitæ numine Max. Jos. consociatæ,1812.6 On the greenhouse, Hic intra hic floræ sobolis et lecta propago. 7 I think you have put this in your journal, for it sounds familiar to me somehow.
I think the German cuisine would be too bad for you, unless you had your own cook and was [sic] very particular, sending away 3-fourths of the things they brought you – Yesterday I subsisted on arrowroot, until well enough for their ordinary provisions. I think of taking a drive in the Englischen Garten 8 in the cool of the evening.
Your affte
Henry
1st June –
They are not come yet. There is a heap of letters for them at the post office and that is the only indication I have, that they have not altogether abandoned their intention of coming here, for they have not written a word to me since the old letter I mentioned. Is it not too bad? – I have seen Martius, who received me very warmly, & enquired most particularly after you. The weather has changed, and grown cooler, showery & pleasant. The English Garden is greatly grown, and is one of the finest public walks in Europe. Pray tell Constance I have just received her letter 9 of the 23d forwarded from Heidelberg. I have not heard from you since I left home.
