Pater Noster Row.
July 17. 1844.
Dear Sir,
I can not recommend you to send copies of your work on sale to the booksellers.1 We have sent it round by a clerk to all the London dealers and it will be down in the country by our travellers. I have myself been disapointed [sic] in not seeing it more generally in the shop window and have called on one or two in the Strand requesting them to take copies, but without success. I have seen it at Ackerman [sic] in the Strand.2 The best suggestion I can give is that you should issue a Specimen of the work containing in the cover one plate, & one or two pages of text with a prospectus, the word Specimen should be printed on the cover and on the plate for security. These specimens might be sent to Brighton, Liverpool & all the principal towns. Mr Hastings who I mentioned as an assistant is well acquainted with all the details of such matters having been our advertising clerk, he is also not ignorant of your process being I understand well acquainted with M. Claudet. 3 –
I am, Dear Sir Yours faithfully
Thomas Longman
Fox Talbot Esq
